Those at center stage in Dart's fifth novel (I'll Be There, 1991, etc.) are all L.A. types and members of a very special therapy group, presided over by a psychologist named Barbara Singer. As Barbara explains: ``It's for families whose babies are the result of the new technologies and arrangements, like open adoption, or insemination.'' These seekers into nongenetic family values include Rick Reisman, a famous director pushing 50 who likes his women bimbotic and between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. only. But the sudden death of his best friend forces Rick to face the emptiness that is his life, leading to his decision to adopt the baby of a pregnant teenager from Kansas. At his right in the therapy circle are Shelly Milton and Ruthie Zimmerman, a team of comedy writers who've never had sex (Shelly's gay) but who have a son, via a test tube. The only trouble is, Shelly's HIV positive. Next comes Judith, who—despairing of ever finding a decent guy- -has made two trips to a sperm bank, resulting in two daughters. And finally there are the De Nardos, who don't always sit together because Mitch has betrayed Lainie by consorting with the surrogate mother of their child, even though they'd all agreed that the woman would disappear as soon as she handed over the baby: VoilÖ!, the kinds of troubles that might make any therapist drool. But Dr. Barbara is not so crass. She helps them all sort out their problems (in not too surprising ways), then cuts them loose to raise their brave new broods. Dart, a former TV comedy writer herself, knows her way around a punch line, not to mention Hollywood. So not to worry if the split focus makes it hard for readers to bond with several of the characters: it's still entertaining, trendy, and seeping with baby lust.

The wife of a notorious Ponzi schemer (think Ruth Madoff, but 20 years younger) hides out from aggrieved investors on Hilderbrand’s home turf, Nantucket.
Meredith Delinn is rescued from her Park Avenue penthouse in the middle of the night after a frantic phone call to her estranged childhood friend Connie. Her husband, Freddy Delinn, has been sentenced to 150 years in a federal penitentiary, and marshals are coming to seize the penthouse and everything in it. Connie, who, with her late husband, famed architect Wolf, had withdrawn their money from Delinn’s fund just in time (whence the estrangement), spirits Meredith off to her Nantucket beachfront retreat. Meredith’s not doing well; she’s even been blackballed by her hairdressers and forced to live without highlights. Investors who formerly hounded her to persuade Freddy to accept their money now howl for her immolation. Even in disguise, she can’t get a pedicure at a Nantucket salon without being called out by an outraged victim. The narrative unfolds from the alternating POVs of Meredith and Connie. While coping with current crises, both women reflect on how their adolescent years shaped the present. Besides her adored father, the most important person in Meredith’s teenage life was Toby, Connie’s charismatic brother, who broke her heart. Instead she married Freddy, her fellow Princetonian. The couple struggled whilst Freddy founded his first hedge fund, but suddenly their fortunes soared. (Too suddenly, Meredith belatedly reflects.) Connie, who grew up in the same Philadelphia Main Line milieu as Meredith, is consumed by grief and regret after Wolf’s death from cancer. Her daughter Ashlyn, whose lesbianism sits ill with Connie, hasn’t spoken to her since Wolf’s funeral. Soused on chardonnay, Connie almost scuttles her first chance at new romance. And Meredith is not so much an example of innocence wronged as passivity repaid. Although the timely premise titillates, the story soon degenerates into just another redemptive middle-aged reconciliation of past and present, complete with many bromidic meditations on the true nature of love. Beach-ready reading.

Cleverly combining tender and tough, Diffenbaugh’s highly anticipated debut creates a place in the world for a social misfit with floral insight.
After more than 32 homes, 18-year-old Victoria Jones, abandoned as a baby, has given up on the idea of love or family. Scarred, suspicious and defiant, she has nothing: no friends, no money, just an attitude, an instinct for flowers and an education in their meaning from Elizabeth, the one kind foster parent who persevered with her. Now graduating out of state care, Victoria must make her own way and starts out by sleeping rough in a local San Francisco park. But a florist gives her casual work and then, at a flower market, she meets Grant, Elizabeth’s nephew, another awkward soul who speaks the language of flowers. Diffenbaugh narrates Victoria and Grant’s present-day involvement, over which the cloud of the past hangs heavy, in parallel with the history of Elizabeth’s foster care, which we know ended badly. After a strong, self-destructive start, Victoria’s long road to redemption takes some dips including an unconvincing, drawn-out subplot involving Elizabeth’s sister, arson and postnatal depression. While true to the logic of its perverse psychology, the story can be exasperating before finally swerving toward the light.
