KIRKUS REVIEW

Puppy Snoozer is scared of the night sounds until he is comforted by the reassurance of his parents. When Snoozer hears the howl of coyotes, hoots of owls and crashes of thunder, Mom and Dad calmly put him back to bed with his teddy and the words, “You are wrapped in our love.” Uncomplicated brown-outlined illustrations of Snoozer’s dark room show a scared puppy and the sounds that plague him as he tries to sleep. Though the story encourages Snoozer to feel comfortable sleeping alone, two of the spreads show him snuggled up with his mother, who is explaining why the sounds are nothing to worry about. It’s hard to see how human children will be convinced to sleep alone if this puppy needs his mother and father to snuggle with. Moreover, the clearly bibliotherapeutic nature of the book results in some odd canine statements, as when Dad tells Snoozer, “Storms … do a lot of good. They freshen the earth and grow our food.” Not even a cuddly green velvet cover can raise this from the mundane. (Picture book. 1-4)
