KIRKUS REVIEW

What if you could fast forward, pause, and rewind your life? Kieran's inventor grandmother's latest is just what he needs: an Anti-Boredom Machine--when things move too slowly for jittery, bounce-around Kieran he, can press FAST FORWARD. No one else notices, but for Kieran things flash by. Trouble is, Kieran is so easily bored that he goes into the fast-forward mode all the time--except when he PAUSES to play pranks on his friends. Soon he doesn't have any friends, fails seventh grade, and seems headed for being a full-time drop out. However, REWIND gives him another chance, and Kieran vows to be more patient next time around. Australian Pausacker makes this blend of science fiction and cautionary tale both involving and poignant. Kieran really is different from his methodical, patient family, but he also loves them and comes to realize it--a nice moral for a hyperkinetic world. Illustrations not seen. (Fiction. 10+)
