When Victor discovers Doris floating belly up in her bowl, his parents suggest “one last swim” as a proper farewell. What seems an appropriately watery burial at sea via a flush down the toilet turns into something spooky. That night the toilet overflows, a fishy smell emanates from the bathroom along with a spooky voice calling Victor’s name, and the light in the fishbowl pirate ship mysteriously turns on. At bedtime the following night, a ghostly Doris emerges from the toilet bowl, with a piranhalike maw and bloodshot eyes, demanding to be fed. Though Doris is exorcised with a boxful of fish flakes, she has a successor with a similar appetite. Made up of five chapters, the tale is introduced by an unseen narrator known as “the Keeper,” “the knower of secrets.” McGee spins off his middle-grade Night Frights series, offering even younger readers the opportunity to visit Wolver Hollow for themselves. Full-color cartoon illustrations on every page support a breezy story infused with a just-right dose of chills, while the simple, linear plot and large font make this a strong offering for newly independent readers. Victor and his parents are brown-skinned and dark-haired.

In the latest installment of the delightfully disturbing chapter-book series, the mundane once more takes on supernatural qualities, this time in the form of veggies.
With this follow-up to Troubling Tonsils! (2025), our host, Jasper Rabbit, once more channels Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling. As Jasper narrates, we meet our heroes: fourth graders Thaddeus Badger and Oliver Possum, who love nothing more than eating junk food, particularly the hamburgers at Hurt-A-Burger (a mildly brilliant corporate name on the author’s part). When Oliver’s parents trick the two into a dinner of salads at their favorite fast-food joint, Thaddeus feels betrayed, but Oliver experiences something a little more dire. Soon after, Oliver starts acting strangely, and his parents begin behaving even more oddly. What’s going on? And does it have anything to do with the full moon? Tone is the true star of the show in this series; the mystery unspools thanks to the buildup of unnerving moments. Reynolds combines suspense with a keen ability to artistically frame both sunny innocent sequences and those rich with dark foreboding. Notably, this is no morality tale about eating your vegetables—this tale is fully on the side of its child readers. Brown’s black-and-white images, punctuated with eerie pops of green, heighten both horrifying and comedic moments.

A warmly reassuring tale for those who prefer their scares on the lighter side.
Bash is back for another session of Scare School.
This second series installment sees the young ghost tasked with completing a group project that requires him to learn about a terrifying place in or around the school. Bash is assigned to work with Wes, a shy but gentle and artistic werewolf, and Vicky and Vlad, two prickly vampires. The group decides to research the spooky forest. Bash is nervous about exploring the forest; plus, he must contend with teammates who don’t pull their own weight (Vicky and Vlad goof off in the gym while Bash and Wes wait for them in the library). But Bash eventually finds a way to confront his fears as he and the others complete their project. Despite the premise, this tale’s more sweet than spooky. Endearing Bash frets about new experiences but proves eager to jump in. He has a delightful, supportive friend in his roommate, Itsy the spider; her tiny knitted socks are an especially charming detail. The characters’ realization that fear can sometimes hold us back will resonate with readers. The plot moves at a steady clip, while stick figure illustrations and comic panels break up the text, giving the tale an appealing, Wimpy Kid–esque vibe.
