A romance that starts out like a breath of retro Daphne Du Maurier, but ends up facile and old hat. Where's a 36-year-old divorcÇe going to find her Prince Charming? Probably not at a mortuary in Tennessee, where Summer McAfee, president of the Daisy Fresh janitorial service, is scrubbing out the men's toilet on Saturday night, filling in for a cleaning crew that never showed up. Imagine her surprise when the corpse of a naked man jumps off an embalming table and takes her hostage. Even with a battered face that makes him look like a monster, Summer knows her attacker is ``just a man. A violent, cruel man clutching a scalpel with which he had threatened to cut her throat.'' Not exactly Jamaica Inn, but promising. Unfortunately, between the time he ties Summer up with her bra and the time he shields her body against a fusillade of bullets, the reader realizes that this monster (``Frankenstein,'' she calls him) is the hero. When he begins cursing her driving and criticizing the size of her purse, it's clear he's the Universal Husband. Regrettably, everybody's out of danger and onto the predictably beaten path of dime-novel romance. The untamed beast, also called Steve, has been mistreated and misjudged. He's an ex-cop back to find out who killed his lover Deedee. (Deedee's ghost shows up throughout, kind of a honky-tonk Tinkerbell.) Running from the bad guys, Summer and Steve ride the Smoky Mountains on a Japanese dirt bike with a temperamental Pekinese. Full breasted and hairy chested (not the dog), they make love in forest glades. When the ride is over, Steve is ready for take-out pizza and weekends at the mall. Robards's usual professional effort (Maggy's Child, 1994, etc.), but a disappointing descent into cute. (Literary Guild alternate selection; Doubleday Book Club main selection; author tour)

Megaselling Roberts (River's End, 1999, etc.) goes to Napa Valley for the tale of an Italian-American family wine producers rocked by scandal and a series of murders.
Dynasty head Tereza Giambelli knows that her granddaughter Sophia is the only family member capable of running a multimillion-dollar wine business—and no one contradicts La Signora. It's just as well the lovely young woman is still single: Tereza has plans for her. The matriarch has recently married Eli MacMillan, the American founder of another famous wine company. Eli's grandson Tyler knows everything there is to know about producing wine, from the vineyard to the vat. Ruggedly handsome, intelligent and earthy, he's a perfect match for public-relations whiz Sophia—or so thinks Tereza. The two young people begin to work together; Tyler teaches Sophia the fine art of making wine and making love. But other family members hope to claim their share of the Giambelli fortune, and people start dying mysteriously, including Sophia's good-for-nothing father, Tony Avano. Long divorced from long-suffering Pilar Giambelli, Tony led an opulent, self-indulgent life that provides plenty of murder suspects. He might have been killed by the mob, or a jealous mistress, or his spoiled brother-in-law, Tereza's lazy son, who's produced a passel of brats with his foolish Italian wife in the hopes of making Tereza happy. Everyone has a motive, and nothing is what it seems, Sophia discovers, but Tyler stands by her. Then a bottle of tainted merlot kills a company exec. A tragic mishap caused by poisonous plants growing near the vines? Or deliberate product tampering intended to destroy the company? Sophia and Tyler will need to delve even deeper into the convoluted and sometimes unsavory history of the family and its three-generation business.

An excellent debut that combines wit, humor, and emotional intensity.
A woman refuses to be with her soul mate, but life intervenes, making her choice harder and more heartbreaking.
Josh meets Kristen with a bang, literally, when she slams on her brakes and he runs into her. There's minimal damage, so she disappears. Minutes later they discover that their best friends are engaged to each other and they were slated to meet that day at the fire station where Brandon and Josh work. Josh is immediately smitten, but Kristen has a boyfriend, Tyler, who’s deployed overseas. Counting down the days until he gets home for good, Kristen adamantly puts Josh in the friend zone, refusing to acknowledge their growing closeness and her spiking attraction. Then Tyler reenlists, effectively breaking up with her. Kristen and Josh sleep together, but she slams the door on his hope for a real relationship, telling him it will never be more than a friends-with-benefits situation. Josh thinks Kristen is mourning the end of her relationship with Tyler, but really, Kristen realizes Josh is her perfect match. Unfortunately she also knows Josh wants children, which would be nearly impossible for them due to her malfunctioning reproductive system. The two reach a painful impasse, but when tragedy strikes, they find themselves reevaluating their relationship. Josh knows he’ll never be happy without Kristen, but he’ll have to think outside the box to convince her to take a chance on them. Jimenez tackles a myriad of issues in her debut and hits each one with depth and sensitivity. Kristen’s take-no-prisoners attitude is smart and sassy and perfectly balanced by Josh’s easygoing resourcefulness, though at times her lack of transparency while jerking him around makes her seem more immature than self-sacrificing.
