In a vivid first-person narrative in the ``Face To Face With Science'' series, a biologist describes the African elephants she has observed in Kenya, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, with handsome color photos showing close-ups of elephants eating, sleeping, nursing, fighting, and taking mud baths. The author, who studied elephants from a small truck on the grassy plains and took most of these photos, also describes her research discoveries: e.g., elephants communicate over long distances by using sounds too low for the human ear. An appealing firsthand account that makes a strong plea for preservation. (Nonfiction. 7-12)
