Schellman transports readers to Regency-era England and tantalizes them with a traditional whodunit.
Fledgling Regency sleuth Lady Lily Adler solves another baffling murder, this time battling…a ghost!
Now that he’s supported Lily in her widow’s grief and abetted her in unraveling two perplexing murder mysteries, Capt. Jack Hartley, the stalwart friend of Lily’s late husband, Freddy, has decided to return to his first love, the sea. After Lily and friends Ned and Ofelia Carroway bid him a fond farewell, they stop at the home of Lily’s Aunt Eliza in Hampshire before a planned return to London. Eliza and her close friend Susan Clarke can’t resist suggesting that Lily would be a perfect match for Matthew Spencer, owner of nearby Morestead Park, before the discussion turns to accounts of a terrifying local ghost. Spencer is indeed courtly and attentive to Lily, but their initial meeting is interrupted by the unctuous Mr. Wright. Scarcely has he introduced himself when his distraught daughter, Selina, bursts in with the news that Mrs. Wright has been murdered by “the lady in gray,” the aforementioned ghost. The intrepid, methodical Lily immediately sets about unraveling the mystery, abetted in Jack’s absence by Ofelia and Ned. Confounding the case is the fact that the victim’s door was locked from the inside. Could the clandestine affair between Selina’s brother, Thomas, and one of the maids be an important piece of the puzzle? The plotline of Lily’s continued self-discovery and empowerment continues in this third adventure, stitched into the period tapestry in ways that never overshadow the murder mystery.

A middling mystery deftly contextualized by the backdrop of the still-standing Newport “cottages” of the period.
A peek inside the lives of the rich, famous, and dead in Newport’s Gilded Age.
Newspaper reporter Emma Cross, who grew up in Newport, has an in with the wealthy crowd since she’s related to the Vanderbilts and engaged to well-connected Derrick Andrews. The couple has been invited to a small party at Beacon Rock, Edwin Morgan's estate, because of Derrick’s support for yacht racing. Though Emma is very different from the spoiled ladies of the Four Hundred, she can hold her own. When she hears a strange noise while on a stroll after dinner with Lucy Carnegie, the only female member of the New York Yacht Club, they discover the body of a dead woman floating near the dock. Thus begins an investigation that the wealthy yachting families would love to see buried along with the body, which is finally identified as that of Lillian Fahey by a picture she carried with the inscription “To Wally Darling, from L” and a ring with two initials. Emma, who has a long history of crime-solving, works well with her childhood friend Jesse Whyte but not so much with resentful homicide investigator Gifford Myers, who is perhaps too subservient to the wealthy families who support the local economy. As she learns more about the clever and independent Lillian, whose father’s designs make him a force in the yachting world, she becomes convinced that Lillian didn’t commit suicide and starts looking for motives for murder.

Aside from a few zingers, Dickinson’s a better poet than cozy detective.
Maybe all writer Emily Dickinson needed to become a crime-solver was the help of her household maid.
Emily’s not a big fan of change. She’s only just recently been adjusting to her brother Austin’s marriage, even though his wife, Susan, is her closest friend. Now that the couple have returned from their honeymoon, they’re already preparing to welcome their first guest to their home, the Evergreens: famed author Ralph Waldo Emerson, who could either lift up local writers or dash their hopes when he speaks at the Amherst Literary Society. Willa Noble, Emily’s household maid and secret friend despite their class differences, can’t help but worry that Mr. Emerson’s presence will put undue stress on Emily, whose admiration for him runs deep. It turns out that Emily’s been more stressed by the presence of Mr. Emerson’s secretary, Luther Howard, who’s been devoting the week to securing the affections of either Emily or her sister, Lavinia, whomever’s head he can turn first. The sudden death of Mr. Howard is something Emily neither welcomes nor mourns, though she’s sad for Lavinia’s sake. When it appears that Mr. Howard has been deliberately poisoned, Emily and Willa work together to solve the case, each exploiting her social position as an asset in her investigation. Along the way, they rub shoulders with several other writing luminaries, especially scene-stealing Miss Alcott, whose candor about writing’s bottom line is notably refreshing.
