A desperate housewife relies on a young attorney’s skills to save her from disaster.
Kira Grant loves her pockets of power. As president of the Garden Club, she can make sure that her turn to host falls in the highly prized late spring months, when her hydrangea border is at its peak. As president of the Wolf Run Elementary School PTA, she can insist that her son, Finn, be honored as one of the two students to earn straight A’s from first through fifth grades. So when Kira is arrested for attempted murder after handing a poisoned smoothie to fellow PTA board member Summer Peerman at the fifth grade graduation party, the prospect of a long prison term isn’t her biggest worry. Being bounced off her boards and, worse, being barred from the school, is. Kira hires young defense attorney Allison Barton to plead her case. She thinks that as the mother of a kindergartener, Allison will empathize with the painful prospect of losing daily contact with her children’s teachers. And if Allison gets out of line, Kira can always ask her senior partner, Dan MacDonald, forever a sucker for a peek of cleavage, to intervene. For the most part, Allison, who burns with a hard and gemlike flame, gives the client her all, although she disagrees with Kira’s desire to cast the suspicion of racism—since Summer is biracial—on a fellow PTA board member as a motive for the attack. In alternating chapters, Wright contrasts conniving Kira with conscientious Allison, leaving the reader to wonder what a legal victory would even look like.

High art meets low life in a tale a lot more sympathetic to the latter.
Someone is stalking the streets of Lt. Eve Dallas’s New York, intent on bringing new life to sex workers by snuffing out their old ones.
In 2061, prostitutes are called licensed companions, and that’s Leesa Culver’s job description when she’s accosted by a plausible-looking artist who wants to hire her as a model for the night. Before the night is over, she’s been drugged, strangled, costumed, and posed as an uncanny replica of Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring. The shock of the crime is deepened by the murder the following night of licensed companion Bobby Ren, whose body is discovered at an art gallery entrance costumed and posed as Gainsborough’s Blue Boy. The killer clearly has an obsessive agenda, a rapid-fire timetable, and access to unlimited financial resources that have allowed him to commission expensive custom-made outfits for the victims. This last detail both marks his power and points to the way Dallas, her gazillionaire husband, Roarke, and her sidekick, Det. Delia Peabody, will track him down by methodically narrowing the field of consumers who’ve purchased the costly costumes. After identifying the guilty party two-thirds of the way through the story, they’ll still face an uphill battle convicting a killer with no conscience, no respect for the law, and a budget that would easily cover the means to jump bail, remove his ankle tracker, and hire a private jet to escape to a foreign land with no extradition treaty. Robb keeps it all consistently absorbing by sweating every procedural detail along with her heroine. Only Dallas’ climactic interrogation of her prisoner is a letdown, because it’s perfectly obvious how she’s going to wangle a confession out of him.

Christmas is coming, but so is trouble for South Lick, Indiana.
Robbie Jordan, owner and chief cook at Pans ’N Pancakes, returns from solving a murder in California just in time for the holiday rush, which is complicated more than most Christmastimes by a number of surprises that disrupt her circle of friends. First, her assistant, Danna Beedle, gets a visit from Marcus Vandemere, a young biracial man claiming to be her half brother, an assertion that thrills Danna despite the doubts of some friends and relatives. Next comes a fire that nearly destroys the home of anesthesiologist Dr. William Geller, a racist whose wife, Tina, reportedly left him years ago. When a skeleton turns up in the attic, the not-so-esteemed doctor has some explaining to do. Robbie’s nemesis, Detective Octavia Slade, who recently married Robbie’s former boyfriend, is more willing than usual to accept help from Robbie, who has a knack for finding things out. The next to die is Tina’s twin, Toni, who knew Marcus from karate classes. Toni’s husband is the prime suspect, but Robbie’s convinced the fatalities are connected. With help from her boyfriend and her network of friends, she attempts to clear things up before the killer spoils her holiday by adding her to his list.
