CUNNING CAT TALES

Three cat folktales are simplified and typographically designed to encourage reading aloud, as the introduction explains, by concentrating on direct speech rather than description. “Puss in Boots,” “The White Cat,” and “Sir Pussycat,” an Italian variation of “Diamonds and Toads,” incorporate different type styles and bold-faced phrases to suggest sound effects and dramatic moments and to allow for multiple voices and listener participation: “Stop complaining!” snorted Puss. “Find me a bag and a fine pair of boots.” Chichester Clark’s familiar sprightly art illustrates the tales; set against white backgrounds, the brightly colored scenes, often no more than spots, enrich each story’s vignettes. The book succeeds in its purpose with the device encouraging expressive reading aloud while bringing two lesser-known tales to young readers and their families. As the introduction says, “All reading starts as reading aloud.” Bravo. (Folktales. 5-8)

RUSSELL THE SHEEP

Scotton makes a stylish debut with this tale of a sleepless sheep—depicted as a blocky, pop-eyed, very soft-looking woolly with a skinny striped nightcap of unusual length—trying everything, from stripping down to his spotted shorts to counting all six hundred million billion and ten stars, twice, in an effort to doze off. Not even counting sheep . . . well, actually, that does work, once he counts himself. Dawn finds him tucked beneath a rather-too-small quilt while the rest of his flock rises to bathe, brush and riffle through the Daily Bleat. Russell doesn’t have quite the big personality of Ian Falconer’s Olivia, but more sophisticated fans of the precocious piglet will find in this art the same sort of daffy urbanity. Quite a contrast to the usual run of ovine-driven snoozers, like Phyllis Root’s Ten Sleepy Sheep, illustrated by Susan Gaber (2004). (Picture book. 6-8)

FIELD TRIP TO THE OCEAN DEEP

A quick but adventuresome paddle into a mysterious realm.

The ocean’s depths offer extra wonders to a child who is briefly left behind on a class trip.

In the wake of their Field Trip to the Moon (2019), a racially diverse group of students boards a submarine (yellow, but not thatone) for a wordless journey to the ocean’s bottom. Donning pressure suits, the children follow their teacher past a swarm of bioluminescent squid, cluster around a black smoker, and pause at an old shipwreck before plodding back. One student, though, is too absorbed in taking pictures to catch the signal to depart and is soon alone amid ancient ruins—where a big, striped, friendly, finny creature who is more than willing to exchange selfies joins the child, but it hides away when the sub-bus swoops back into sight to pick up its stray. Though The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor (1994) carries a considerably richer informational load, in his easy-to-follow sequential panels Hare does accurately depict a spare assortment of benthic life and features, and he caps the outing with a labeled gallery of the errant student’s photos (including “Atlantis?” and “Pliosaur?”). The child is revealed at the end to be Black. Hare also adds cutaway views at the end of a diving suit and the sub. (This book was reviewed digitally with 10-by-19-inch double-page spreads viewed at 40% of actual size.)
