Not many con men are also trained firefighters. But when Danny Cole was convicted of a typically bold con eight years ago after a heroically unselfish act derailed his escape, he volunteered for service as a convict firefighter alongside a crew of other convicts that included car-leasing scammer Arnie Soloway. Arnie’s death fighting a fire around the extravagant home of millionaire Roland Slezak, who leaned on his connections to make sure the blaze spared his home at a high cost to others, has made Danny hunger for vengeance, if possible with substantial financial profits on the side. So he comes up with a staggeringly audacious plan: to persuade underwater real estate developer Levi Brisker, Slezak’s neighbor, to host his surviving cohort while they set a fire that will burn down every home in the area but Brisker’s, whose value will accordingly skyrocket. As Danny methodically lays the groundwork for his coup once he's released from prison, LA County arson investigator Walter Sharpe and his new deputy, former U.S. Marshal Andrew Walker, who Sharpe aptly says “could make delivering pizzas a high-risk job,” learn of an Icarus drone that’s gone missing from CAL FIRE and trace its theft to Danny. While heroes and villains race against the clock and each other, Goldberg creates such a maelstrom of loyalties that it’s hard to know who to root for. Could Danny possibly get his revenge even while justice is done in a technical sense as well?

Wyoming Game and Fish Warden Joe Pickett has been shot plenty of times before. But this time may be the last.
As Joe hovers between life and death in a Billings hospital, Box indicates that Dorn Peddy and James Dale O’Bryan are the two men who ambushed him, shot him, and left him for dead. But he doesn’t reveal who hired them or why. That’s left up to Joe’s three daughters: bird-abatement firm chief executive Sheridan, Bozeman private eye April, and University of Wyoming undergrad Lucy. Since the man who reported the incident to the Twelve Sleep County Sheriff’s Department has disappeared, the most that newly appointed Sheriff Steve Sondergard can do is to warn Sheridan and her sisters away from the case. But the fact that both the shooters and the witness seem to have come from one of exactly three places presents an obvious appeal to the younger Picketts, who plan to each visit one place and question the owners simultaneously before they can warn each other that anyone’s coming. When a man accused of rape turns up dead, an Early American town seeks justice amid rumors and controversy.
Lawhon’s fifth work of historical fiction is inspired by the true story and diaries of midwife Martha Ballard of Hallowell, Maine, a character she brings to life brilliantly here. As Martha tells her patient in an opening chapter set in 1789, “You need not fear….In all my years attending women in childbirth, I have never lost a mother.” This track record grows in numerous compelling scenes of labor and delivery, particularly one in which Martha has to clean up after the mistakes of a pompous doctor educated at Harvard, one of her nemeses in a town that roils with gossip and disrespect for women’s abilities. Supposedly, the only time a midwife can testify in court is regarding paternity when a woman gives birth out of wedlock—but Martha also takes the witness stand in the rape case against a dead man named Joshua Burgess and his living friend Col. Joseph North, whose role as judge in local court proceedings has made the victim, Rebecca Foster, reluctant to make her complaint public. Further complications are numerous: North has control over the Ballard family's lease on their property; Rebecca is carrying the child of one of her rapists; Martha’s son was seen fighting with Joshua Burgess on the day of his death. Lawhon weaves all this into a richly satisfying drama that moves suspensefully between childbed, courtroom, and the banks of the Kennebec River. The undimmed romance between 40-something Martha and her husband, Ephraim, adds a racy flair to the proceedings. Knowing how rare the quality of their relationship is sharpens the intensity of Martha’s gaze as she watches the romantic lives of her grown children unfold. As she did with Nancy Wake in Code Name Hélène (2020), Lawhon creates a stirring portrait of a real-life heroine and, as in all her books, includes an endnote with detailed background.
