KIRKUS REVIEW

A satisfactory compendium, with double spreads on topics moving outward from the child's body, family, feelings, and home to the classroom and subjects like shapes, colors, and numbers as well as the neighborhood, holidays, and animals. Shiffman's illustrations are realistic, clear, and attractive (if undistinguished); the fact that her characters are people, not animals, recommends this as an alternative to the ubiquitous Richard Scarry. The first person of the title, who appears throughout, is the Caucasian Jillian, but other races are also represented (Jillian's doctor is a black woman). Words that caption objects are well placed and include a good selection to both confirm and expand vocabulary. (Picture book. 2-7)
