KIRKUS REVIEW

Sixteen-year-old Lily lands an internship with Samantha Snow, a rising Hollywood starlet. At first, Lily sees only the glamour of her teenaged boss, as she strives to meet the girl’s impossible demands. Lily fumbles comically through Samantha’s cyclonic whims, all the while trying to remain at arm’s length from Samantha’s boyfriend, with whom Lily develops a forbidden bond. At last, realizing that Samantha will never help a desperately unhappy young fan, Lily acts on her own. Although the opening chapters seem nearly complete froth, this debut novel grows into an intriguing character study of both Lily and Samantha. Alas, it comes close but doesn’t quite fulfill its potential, missing some growth in Lily’s character arc, as she remains abjectly apologetic until she suddenly, finally fights back. Nonetheless, Zindel displays real talent. The insider’s view of celebrity life will appeal to many young readers. A good first outing. (Fiction. YA)
