A straightforward, detailed description of a traditional 15th-birthday celebration--in this case, that of Mexican-born Martha Jimenez, an eighth-grader in Austin, Texas. In an introduction, Lankford compares this formal rite of passage to a bar mitzvah or the Navajo kinaalda; with its elaborate clothing, attendants, special mass, dancing, and feast, it also resembles a wedding. Photos follow the preparations and festivities step by step; whether in color or b&w, they're sometimes a bit dark, but overall their informality underscores the authenticity of the proceedings. This will be particularly welcome as the only children's book on this important ceremony. A note debates the unresolved issue of ``Hispanic'' vs. ``Latina.'' Further reading; index.
