Two girls get swept up in a murder mystery in their small town.
It’s a hot summer, and 12-year-old Abbi and her best friend, Skylar, spend their days at the mall, the pool, and the library. When Skylar, the more daring of the duo, decides they should bike to the edge of town, a seedy area where the bullies from their school live, Abbi has reservations but says yes anyway. The discovery of a treehouse makes the journey worthwhile, and things become even more interesting when they spot a mysterious man and woman meeting up just below. Are they Russian spies like Abbi imagines or just regular adults having an affair like Skylar’s dad did? The fun mystery turns serious, though, when the woman runs off into the menacing woods. When a beloved teacher goes missing, the friends piece together the information and have to figure out how to help without winding up in trouble with their parents, or worse. The prolific Hahn, particularly known for her eerie ghost stories, stays away from the supernatural in this quick-paced tale but keeps the thrills coming. She expertly captures the feel of a small-town summer and tumultuous middle school friendships and never talks down to young readers or shies away from frank descriptions of real-world threats. Still, an optimistic ending shows there is always light and joy to be found. The protagonists are cued White.

A group of bright friends tackles the puzzle of their lives.
Elmwood, New Hampshire, 11-year-old Gina Sparks is small in stature but big on reporting ongoing dramas for the local newspaper with support from her journalist mom. When an unbelievable scoop comes her way, Gina must rely on her tightknit crew of sixth grade best friends whose initials happen to spell GEEK, a label they choose to proudly reclaim. She and science-minded prankster Elena Hernández, theater kid Edgar Feingarten, and driven math genius Kevin Robinson decide to get to the bottom of things when they learn that the Van Houten Toy & Game Company heir made elaborate plans to leave everything to the town of Elmwood before her death—but only if a member of the community could solve an intricate multistep puzzle. Gina hopes that deciphering the clues and finding the missing fortune will be just the thing to revitalize the down-on-its-luck town and bring the Elmwood Tribune back into the black, saving her mom’s job and Gina’s passion project. The GEEKs work together, using their individual talents and deductive reasoning skills to unravel the mystery. Toxic waste dumped in the Everglades gives a quartet of middle school sleuths their first case.
Leading Carl Hiaasen fans over familiar ground, Ponti pitches 12-year-old Alex Sherlock and his 13-year-old sister, Zoe, with school friends Lina and Yadi as sidekicks, into a summer caper. It all begins with the hunt for a supposed fortune buried decades ago by Al Capone, culminates in a narrow escape from an exploding yacht, and ultimately exposes a smooth-talking bad actor shady enough to bring in even federal authorities. As the kids’ live-in Grandpa, a retired investigative reporter, delivers pointers on how to conduct interviews and sift evidence while grandly driving them around South Florida in his classic Cadillac, Roberta, the budding detectives display sharp wits, eyes, and negotiating skills. The last come in particularly useful when they’re dealing with their lawyer…who’s also their mom. Both the plot and the chain of evidence take logical courses, and since Dad is a marine biologist and Lina’s a recent transplant from Wyoming, Ponti is able to use their dialogue to highlight the local culture and larger ecological issues. Main characters present white, apart from tech wiz Yadi, who is cued Latine.
