A perfectly competent thriller for those who can suspend disbelief.
One of life's great ethical questions is considered in this novel, with mixed results.
Alina Chase has spent her whole life being blamed for something that happened before she was born. In a time when souls can be tracked from one life to the next, Alina's soul was previously June Calahan, who broke into the soul-registry database and allegedly blackmailed powerful figures with criminal pasts. June’s crime was so heinous that Alina has grown up in confinement in an island prison. When she is rescued by oddly friendly former guard Dominic and Cameron and Casey, a pair of siblings with their own agenda, Alina is hopeful that she might finally escape June's shadow. But it's not so simple when it's revealed that Dominic has his own connection with June, and he wants Alina to hack back into the soul database. That sends Alina on the run with Cameron and Casey. A romance with Cameron will give Alina the strength to find out the truth about June—and hopefully finally break free. The story’s success rests on readers’ ability to accept the fear that June still inspires, which many may find extreme. The villains are from the mustache-twirling school, but Alina, Casey and Cameron are well-drawn.

Black is building a complex mythology; now is a great time to tune in.
Black is back with another dark tale of Faerie, this one set in Faerie and launching a new trilogy.
Jude—broken, rebuilt, fueled by anger and a sense of powerlessness—has never recovered from watching her adoptive Faerie father murder her parents. Human Jude (whose brown hair curls and whose skin color is never described) both hates and loves Madoc, whose murderous nature is true to his Faerie self and who in his way loves her. Brought up among the Gentry, Jude has never felt at ease, but after a decade, Faerie has become her home despite the constant peril. Black’s latest looks at nature and nurture and spins a tale of court intrigue, bloodshed, and a truly messed-up relationship that might be the saving of Jude and the titular prince, who, like Jude, has been shaped by the cruelties of others. Fierce and observant Jude is utterly unaware of the currents that swirl around her. She fights, plots, even murders enemies, but she must also navigate her relationship with her complex family (human, Faerie, and mixed). This is a heady blend of Faerie lore, high fantasy, and high school drama, dripping with description that brings the dangerous but tempting world of Faerie to life.

A compelling romance inhabited by complex and appealing characters.
When star hockey player Alec Barczewski’s estranged childhood friend, Dani Collins, moves to town, they end up in a mutually beneficial fake-dating relationship that reignites old feelings.
Following her parents’ divorce, Dani and her mom move in with Dani’s hockey legend grandfather in Southview, Minnesota, where she spent a month every summer as a child and where her friendship with Alec grew. Between visits, the two were pen pals, but they eventually fell out of touch. Despite some tensions over their loss of friendship, the high school seniors reconnect. Desperate to get off Harvard’s waitlist, Dani needs another extracurricular activity, while Alec—whose reputation took a hit when a photo of him holding a bong appeared on social media—is eager to improve his tarnished image for NHL scouts. The pair strike a deal: They’ll fake date, making Alec look like a stable guy whose academically gifted girlfriend is related to hockey royalty, and in exchange, he’ll get Dani a team manager position that will catch the eye of Harvard’s admissions officers. Eventually, complicated feelings about their past, stressful family relationships, and their brewing romance boil over. Romance fans will love the deliciously tension-filled scenes between Alec and Dani, who are believable friends with heavy demands weighing on them. They feel like real teenagers, and readers will enjoy rooting for them as the well-paced story unfolds. Main characters present white.
