Funny chapter titles will amuse adults, and subtle visual details make this a fable book that new readers will return to.
The familiar fable about Fox and Crow, retold for new readers.
Youngsters will quickly understand the word “outfoxed” after reading these tales of flattery, greed and cheese, told as three connected short stories. Fox and Crow are enemies, fighting over one hunk of cheese as if it were the last morsel of food on the planet. It won’t take long for readers to giggle at just how far these two will go for the cheese. Fox gets the best of Crow in the first story, in which Fox flatters Crow into dropping the cheese directly into Fox’s mouth. Next, Crow dreams of ways to get the cheese back and spends every waking moment constructing a cunning trap, with stew-covered Crow as the lure. Success! Fox retaliates in the final chapter, but both critters are outsmarted by the watchful Mama Bear. Humorous watercolor illustrations are punctuated by thought bubbles showing the animals' plans; other playful details include the owl’s eyes watching the shenanigans from a safe distance and the eventual sheepish looks when the enemies are trapped in the same net, with Mama Bear chastising them from the side.
Funny chapter titles will amuse adults, and subtle visual details make this a fable book that new readers will return to. (Early reader. 3-7)Pub Date: Aug. 7, 2012

Anyone ever simultaneously excited and nervous about leaving home and traveling to new places will identify with this droll...
In this latest Duck & Goose escapade, Duck and Goose spontaneously trek to the beach, where their reactions are decidedly mixed.
After agreeing how much they love relaxing in the meadow, Duck suddenly suggests they should immediately take a trip. Enthusiastic and excited, Duck ooozes excitement, while Goose clearly would rather stay home. Oblivious, Duck heads out with Goose reluctantly in tow. Passing familiar landmarks, they enter foreign territory and eventually arrive at the beach. “[P]retty sure” he loves the beach, even though he’s never been there, Duck heedlessly races to the shore, where he’s quickly overwhelmed by the sound of the waves, the vast stretch of sky and “SO MUCH” water. As Duck’s excitement wanes, Goose embraces the waves and eagerly explores the seashore. Soft oils transport the impressively simple, silly little figures of Duck and Goose in their floppy sun hats across single- and double-page spreads, from the greens of the meadow to the blues, whites and tans of sky, water and sand, while their expressive eyes and postures amply convey comic emotion and visual back story.
Anyone ever simultaneously excited and nervous about leaving home and traveling to new places will identify with this droll duo on their first amusing trip to the beach. (Picture book. 3-7)Pub Date: April 8, 2014

Sure to become a read-aloud favorite.
Feeling safe and comfortable in his tree, Kevin the koala resists the invitation to come down and have fun.
Despite encouragement from a wombat, the roos, and the dingoes, the uncertainty of what might happen below is too much for Kevin to overcome. So he refuses and makes excuses. Later, while watching the others share in a bonfire singalong, he briefly considers joining then rationalizes, “But he knew he’d miss home / …it was dark and SO late. / The whole thing was risky. / Adventure could wait.” Until a woodpecker comes along: “TAP TAPPITY TAP TAP TAP TAP OH NO!” The woodpecker’s destruction creates a break in Kevin’s tree, causing it to come crashing down even as his friends plead with him to “UN-CLING!” and “Leap and we’ll catch you! / Just let yourself go!” Field’s expressive and humorous Australian-animal caricatures vividly extend the nicely paced rhyming narrative’s message. Kevin’s worried, nervous frowns are paralleled with happy, cheering smiles of his Down Under buddies. The climactic scene’s clattering smash, with Kevin’s possessions flying while he clutches, eyes squeezed shut, his branch, brings the story to a sudden thundering pause. The next page shows everyone’s surprised wide-eyed relief and love for Kevin, who has survived his worst fear and will now be willing and able to try new things.
Sure to become a read-aloud favorite. (Picture book. 3-6)Pub Date: Oct. 31, 2017
