KIRKUS REVIEW

Three little white bears receive musical instruments for their birthday. Theodore can beat his drum, and Oswald can twang his banjo, but the only sound Sebastian can coax from his trumpet is ``Pfffft.'' After blowing and blowing, he is reduced to tears of frustration, and his mother gently advises him to rest and try again later. When Sebastian wakes up, he finally produces a resounding ``ta-ta-ta-rooooooon!'' The variation on the if-at- first-you-don't-succeed message is amiably conveyed in large, rough-edged letters and simple, heavily outlined figures presented against bare pastel-colored pages. The chubby, pink-cheeked bears are identical except for hats and bowties in difference colors. Share this with those who want to join in on the sound effects. (Picture book. 2-4)
