KIRKUS REVIEW

During his last semester, Huey imperils his graduation by nearly destroying his hitherto exemplary school record. Unable to choose, Huey is secretly dating two girls and telling each she's his ``best.'' His English teacher lowers his grade because he's tardy several times as a result of guarding herons against a poacher for a nursing home resident. Denied an anticipated transfer, he fails a test; his father grounds him. Huey promises to improve; instead, his situation continues to deteriorate: he misses class after blowing up during a tornado drill. Still, all ends well: he's excused from assemblies to work on English, catches the poacher (who almost kills him), and gets his love life sorted out to everyone's satisfaction. Huey's sudden disintegration and inability to cope are inadequately motivated and out of character with his earlier achievements. In addition to the lack of development here, the lapses, gaps, and blind leads are too numerous to mention. A disappointing effort. (Fiction. 12+)
