An impersonal look at the Iditarod, with few names or specific incidents, and decorative--if not particularly informative--illustrations. Seibert recounts the dramatic ordeal the Iditarod commemorates but leaves out important details (why is it run along an alternate route every other year?) and spends more time describing the sled dogs than the colorful people who organize and run the race. Ellis fills some borders with Alaskan wildflowers or Eskimo artifacts, but she too is most interested in the dogs, depicting them in some detail, but more often at rest than at work. For another view of the Iditarod, Cooper's Racing Sled Dogs (1988) is longer but livelier, while younger readers can be steered to Standiford's Bravest Dog Ever (1989). (Nonfiction. 6-8)
