The aggressively disturbing conclusion places this one far beyond the pale of standard procedurals.
An investigation into two dead babies leads the ex-wife of a serial killer and her police officer best friend into serious danger.
As much as Gwen Proctor wishes she could sleep through the night, she’s already awake when she gets an early morning call from her best friend, Kezia Claremont. Gwen’s history of having killed her husband, serial murderer Melvin Royal, means that her senses are always a hairbreadth from panic. Like Gwen’s romantic partner, Sam Cade, and her kids, Lanny and Connor, Kez is used to Gwen’s constant vigilance. She and Gwen have put their shared eyes for trouble into their work, Gwen as an investigator and Kez as a police officer. This time Kez needs Gwen’s emotional support more than her professional expertise. The two meet at a small pond where a car is submerged with twin baby girls still strapped into their car seats. It’s a rough scene made even more difficult for Kez, who’s just learned that she’s pregnant and is processing the good news alone because her partner, Javier, is away on duty with the Marines. Kez and Gwen’s investigations lead them to the girls’ likely mother, Sheryl Lansdowne, who might well have drowned her babies and run off if she was onto a quick buck. But Gwen’s certain there’s something bigger at play, particularly when her family is targeted for harassment by someone convinced that Gwen’s history as Gina Royal makes her just as culpable as Melvin. The slow-burning investigation goes to some dark places. Fans of Caine's Stillhouse Lake series may be prepared for the grim climax; the uninitiated should brace themselves for a quick turn into some deeply troubling stuff.

Nottingham forensic psychologist Cyrus Haven investigates a mass migrant murder in his fourth outing.
Cyrus and his friend Evie Cormac—born Adina Osmani—are enjoying a day at the beach when a woman screams that someone is floating in the ocean. Cyrus swims to the rescue, but he’s too late. Then more bodies float in, 17 in all with but one survivor. They had come from the Middle East, desperately trying to reach British soil. But miles out in the English Channel, another boat had rammed into their inflatable dinghy, sinking it. Who? Why? Was it an accident? Was it xenophobia, a warning to keep foreigners out? Or does it go deeper? A mysterious ferryman is said to control the human trafficking across the channel, but most people think him a bogeyman, the stuff of ghost stories. Then the lone survivor is murdered; how will police ever learn what happened now? In Scotland, Cyrus is told, “Oh, that’s a dangerous beastie, the truth, a monster in the loch.” Cyrus and Evie narrate alternating fast-paced chapters that will rivet the reader’s attention. Both have backgrounds you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. Cyrus’ older brother murdered their parents and two sisters. Evie, from Albania, lost her family and has been sexually trafficked and tortured. “Coin-sized lesions” from cigarette burns pock her legs and abdomen. Cyrus fostered her, and they have become good friends. The interplay between the two main characters makes the story stand out. She’s attracted to him, but the feeling is not mutual. He cares deeply about her, but he’ll never violate his professional ethics. So she’s both jealous and happy knowing that he’s “bumping uglies” with a more appropriate woman. In his words, Evie is “damaged and self-destructive and a pathological liar, but she is also funny and feisty and intelligent and empathetic.” There’s also a great secondary character from Zimbabwe who deserves a role in Cyrus and Evie’s next adventure.

A smart and highly original work of modern fantasy.
After the events of Book of Night (2022), Charlie Hall is forced to hunt down the perpetrator of a terrible massacre.
Charlie Hall is the Hierophant: It’s her job to be tethered to a powerful, independent shadow—a “Blight”— and hunt down other Blights for the Cabals, the heads of their respective shadow-magic specialties. The Cabals use the difficult job of Hierophant as a punishment, but Charlie agreed to take it on so she could be the person tethered to Vince, aka Red, the Blight who posed as a human and ended up dating and falling in love with Charlie. The Cabal leaders used magic to steal the part of Red’s memory that contained his relationship with Charlie, and so Charlie is determined to steal Red’s memories back. And she needs to move fast, because if Red doesn’t remember loving her, he just might be OK with Charlie being killed if it means his own freedom. Meanwhile, Mr. Punch, a terrifying Cabal leader who specializes in using shadow magic to possess other people’s bodies, has a job for Charlie: He wants her to find the culprit behind a terrible massacre that was attributed to a cult. He suspects that the people were actually killed by a Blight, and he doesn’t want the Cabals to face the blowback if the truth becomes public. Mr. Punch could do terrible things to Charlie if she fails, but if she succeeds, he’ll help Charlie and Red be free of the Cabals for good. The sophomore novel in a series is always tough, but this sequel proves that the second book can be even better than the first. Black turns the screws on the magical world she set up in Book 1, creating complicated political motives between Charlie and the Cabal leaders and making the question of what it means for a shadow, like Red, to have their own consciousness more interesting. Veteran con artist Charlie makes some truly brilliant moves, especially toward the end, where the last few chapters have one terrific surprise after the other.
