KIRKUS REVIEW

Retold from unnamed sources, these 23 myths, legends, and historical anecdotes feature deities both kind- and cold-hearted, sages, scholars, poets, and martial heroes of both sexes—all depicted in colorful, ornately-detailed posters produced in China in the early 20th century and selected from Chiang’s personal collection. Though the Eight Immortals do defeat the Dragon King to rescue one of their number, and the Monkey King successfully drives off an army of devils, in general the tales are more about love, loyalty, proper respect for family, and other Confucian or Daoist ideals rather than action or adventure. Opening with a schematic dynasty map and closing with an essay on the distinctive illustrations, this wide-ranging collection will introduce readers to traditional Chinese values, as well as classic stories and characters. (superfluous index) (Folktales. 8-10)
