Derry, 16, is one of nine young people living in an isolated lake house in Indiana. Each has unique abilities that qualify them as alchemists; Derry can grow and manipulate plants, even imagined ones. Their guardian, a middle-aged nonmagical White man called Frank, monitors their powers’ progress and sets strict rules to protect them, including not going outside without permission, especially not into the nearby forest. But danger has come to this found family. One by one, older sisters disappear without a trace, while the remaining sisters and their nonbinary sibling question their safety within the house. Following disembodied voices, Derry ventures into the forest alone at night to try to discover what happened to her sisters and maybe learn more about her powers, her home, and herself. Hollowell builds a magical atmosphere with ominous, spooky overtones. There is a good variety of identity representations among the family members, and the bonds among these adopted siblings are adamantine. The siblings have diverse body types and all function with anxiety and depression. One sister is Deaf, so some dialogue is signed. Bespectacled Derry is White and fat, while her siblings are White, Black, and Mexican American as well as queer. However, several references to the wendigo outside an Indigenous context are unfortunate. Heavy themes of mental and emotional abuse and some graphic violence make this an intense read.

Adolescent criminals seek the haul of a lifetime in a fantasyland at the beginning of its industrial age.
The dangerous city of Ketterdam is governed by the Merchant Council, but in reality, large sectors of the city are given over to gangs who run the gambling dens and brothels. The underworld's rising star is 17-year-old Kaz Brekker, known as Dirtyhands for his brutal amorality. Kaz walks with chronic pain from an old injury, but that doesn't stop him from utterly destroying any rivals. When a councilman offers him an unimaginable reward to rescue a kidnapped foreign chemist—30 million kruge!—Kaz knows just the team he needs to assemble. There's Inej, an itinerant acrobat captured by slavers and sold to a brothel, now a spy for Kaz; the Grisha Nina, with the magical ability to calm and heal; Matthias the zealot, hunter of Grishas and caught in a hopeless spiral of love and vengeance with Nina; Wylan, the privileged boy with an engineer's skills; and Jesper, a sharpshooter who keeps flirting with Wylan. Bardugo broadens the universe she created in the Grisha Trilogy, sending her protagonists around countries that resemble post-Renaissance northern Europe, where technology develops in concert with the magic that's both coveted and despised. It’s a highly successful venture, leaving enough open questions to cause readers to eagerly await Volume 2.

A meticulously crafted magical medical mystery with an emotionally substantive romance.
As in earlier entries, this trilogy closer blends genres as it presents a quest to resolve a strange plague alongside a heartfelt romance and an exploration of shifting allegiances.
With Theo Brood’s father dispatched, Theo and Ren Monroe begin the arduous task of turning the Brood estate into something more egalitarian. Meanwhile, medical student Mercy Whitaker has been sent by her mentor, Dr. Horn, to help victims of a plague that’s sweeping nearby farms. Quick thinking and dogged detective skills lead her right to the source—but not to a full explanation of what’s going on. Concurrently, questions arise after someone from Ren’s past goes missing. Nevelyn Tin’Vori’s careful research, part of her ongoing desire to undermine the Brood dynasty, leads her right to the answers everyone seeks, ones that are directly connected to Mercy’s gruesome discovery. Alliances new and old form and break, as a shadowy group called the Makers threatens to bring down not just the Broods but magic itself. The solidity of the central characters, who continue to grow emotionally through their many varied experiences, brings coherence to the series. Though Ren and Theo, who present white, have grown up over the course of the books, the steadily upbeat pacing and judicious worldbuilding remain ideal for teen readers, preventing any stagnation in this series that ends as interestingly as it started.
