In this memoir, Richardson recounts the physical and emotional trials of post-polio syndrome and her resulting struggle to continue creating her art.

In 1946, when the author was only eight weeks old, she was diagnosed with polio, and two months later, her doctors declared her fully recovered and healthy. However, at the age of 56, she began to suffer from a “cluster of disabling symptoms” that were eventually diagnosed as post-polio syndrome. The author was beset by a rapid decrease of strength in her arms, which threatened her ability to continue as a fine art painter: “The universe had flipped a lever and switched me onto a new track, one where I couldn’t behave as I always had. The scariest part was that I didn’t have access to the new rules.” Richardson had to retool her entire life to accommodate her newfound physical limitations, including training her left hand as her dominant one, as it had more strength and dexterity. The author’s story is heartbreaking and life-affirming, by turns. Over the course of this remembrance, she shows how she struggled profoundly, not only with her new condition but also with the anxiety and depression that ensued, and how she persevered despite these difficulties. She writes in admirably candid terms, sharing the fears that gnawed away at her in a confessional tone and conveying them in poignant, affecting language. Richardson also provides a thorough introduction to an affliction that affects many but is little known or understood: “We outnumbered all the people with Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injuries combined.” Overall, it’s a moving remembrance, by turns harrowing and inspirational.

“Almost everyone in Jerusalem in those days,” writes novelist Oz (The Same Sea, 2001, etc.) of the 1940s, “was either a poet or a writer or a researcher or a thinker or a scholar or a world reformer.” Oz’s uncle Joseph Klausner, for instance, kept a 25,000-volume library in every conceivable language, its dusty volumes providing a madeleine for the young writer, “the smell of a silent, secluded life devoted to scholarship,” even as his grandmother contemplated the dusty air of the Levant and concluded that the region was full of germs, whence “a thick cloud of disinfecting spirit, soaps, creams, sprays, baits, insecticides, and powder always hung in the air.” His own father had to sell his beloved books in order to buy food when money was short, though he often returned with more books. (“My mother forgave him, and so did I, because I hardly ever felt like eating anything except sweetcorn and icecream.”) Out in the street, Oz meets a young Palestinian woman who is determined to write great poems in French and English; cats bear such names as Schopenhauer and Chopin; the walls of the city ring with music and learned debate. But then there is the dark side: the war of 1948, with its Arab Legion snipers and stray shells, its heaps of dead new emigrants fresh from the Holocaust. “In Nehemiah Street,” writes Oz, “once there was a bookbinder who had a nervous breakdown, and he went out on his balcony and screamed, Jews, help, hurry, soon they’ll burn us all.” In this heady, dangerous atmosphere, torn by sectarian politics and the constant threat of terror, Oz comes of age, blossoming as a man of letters even as the bookish people of his youth begin to disappear one by one.

In this moving memoir, filmmaker and novelist Kumar explores encounters with birds as meditations on the natural world. Told in a series of vignettes comprised of notable bird sightings, the narrative offers countless magnificent reminders of the beauty and force of nature as well as warnings of human-caused destruction as bird populations plummet due to such factors as habitat loss, water shortages, and changing temperatures. Kumar didn’t take up birding until her 20s, when a chance encounter on the beach with some avid birders and a flock of curlews transformed her life. This experience became her access point to nature, and she nurtured that connection, whether living in urban settings like Los Angeles or, later, rural New Mexico, where “even the winters are sun-drenched.” Through birds, the author was able to revisit the childhood intimacy with her surroundings that she cherished growing up in the heavily forested mountains of northeastern India. “Birds became a portal to a more vivid, enchanted world,” she writes, and “allowed me once again to relish solitude in the way I had as a child.” This sense of enchantment permeates the book as she brings us along on her adventures, including long odysseys to see bald eagles, bobcat sightings through her living room window, and glimpses of the mango-colored tanager in a city park. The author is clearly concerned about leaving a planet rich with wildlife for her children, but her ancestors are also on her mind. She lost both her parents and brother as a young adult, and she connects to their spirits through birds and nature. Ultimately, this is a book about the interconnectedness of generations and ecosystems, and birds are the conduit between the two. “Sometimes it just takes the right bird to awaken us,” writes Kumar.
