A granddaughter of the 34th president celebrates his life and accomplishments.

The author, who published a memoir, Mrs. Ike (1996), about her grandmother, turns her attention to her grandfather in this mix of biography, memoir, and history; she has few negative things to say about him other than the fact that he did not like phone calls but rather “far preferred to meet his colleagues in person.” Instead, she celebrates his remarkable life, noting his humility and “intellectual honesty” and how he was “transparent and accountable” to the public and possessed a “determination to put the country first.” The author is clearly determined to remind readers of his many accomplishments—not only in World War II (he organized D-Day, among many other operations), but during the eight years of his presidency (1953-1961). She credits him for laying the groundwork for civil rights—e.g., he sent the 101st Airborne to Little Rock to facilitate school integration—balancing budgets, keeping us out of war, working hard to get the U.S. into space, refusing to attack his critics in public, and declining to diminish himself by responding to Sen. Joseph McCarthy and, later, to the Democrats (JFK among them) who tried to use the early Soviet space achievements for a political advantage. She shows him as an empathetic family man with a strong moral compass. In the epilogue, the author attacks the tribalism poisoning our current political climate. “Our culture no longer understands what was deeply ingrained in Eisenhower and many of his generation,” she writes. “Today we seem to think that strength is derived from winning every small fight, while raising ourselves up for recognition and advancement, even if others have to be diminished in the process….To [him] the exact opposite was fundamental to his beliefs.”

Graceful and deeply felt.

A collection of personal pieces, combined into an affecting memoir by longtime New Yorker editor Angell.

The author, a noted baseball writer (A Pitcher’s Story, 2001, etc.), has many intimate connections to the magazine Gardner Botsford once dubbed “The Comic Weekly,” in which most of these reminiscences originally appeared. His mother, Katherine, was the New Yorker’s fiction editor; years later, Angell held her former job—and occupied her office. His stepfather, E.B. White, was the magazine’s most important contributor during its most influential years. The memoir mostly concerns New Yorker colleagues and other remarkable people who have been a part of the author’s life. His father, lawyer Ernest Angell, lost Katherine to the younger White but over the years became a figure of immense importance to Roger. Angell loved his mother, loved White, loved his first wife (not much here about the cause of their 1960s divorce), loved his coworkers, loved his job. His portraits are really tributes, whether of the well-known William Maxwell, V.S. Pritchett, Harold Ross or William Shawn, or the lesser-known Botsford and Emily Hahn. Angell offers some New Yorker–insider tidbits (Ian Frazier mimicked Shawn’s voice so well that he could fool colleagues over the phone) and a bit more than you want to know about some of his aunts, one of whom wrote a book about Willa Cather. A dazzling story-within-a-story describes a 1940 round of golf with a mysterious woman who lost a valuable ring. The author seems uncertain how an iPod works but reveals an expertise with machine guns. His fickle memory frustrates and bemuses him. Sometimes he can recall only sensory images; sometimes the story unreeling in his mind skips, stops, fades, dissolves into something else. In several of his most appealing passages, he writes about the fictions that memory fashions.

Intelligent reading filled with candor and sympathy.

An Irish-born, New York–based comedian gets serious about her life experiences in early-21st-century America.

Higgins begins her latest essay collection by reflecting on pandemic loneliness and hoping “that it not impart any damn lessons. I can’t stand when horrible and senseless things happen and people insist on finding some neat takeaway to make sense of it all.” This darkly humorous observation sets the tone for the difficult topics she discusses throughout the book, such as her battle with “great waves of anxiety and depression.” The author couches discussions of mental health in a story of getting so high on THC–laced candy that she feared she had lost her mind. As frightening as the misadventure was, it made Higgins realize that in the U.S., she had found the freedom, unavailable to her in Ireland, to treat depression as “just a fact of life.” Being an immigrant granted other perks, as well, like the ability to see the racial subjugation and White supremacy issues underlying the controversy surrounding Confederate statues. She also demonstrates profound empathy for undocumented Mexican immigrants who have experienced the “increasingly draconian treatment” of U.S. border patrol agents. Reflecting on her own easy ability to cross borders and seek American citizenship as a White, middle-class European woman of ambition, she writes, “how free am I when others aren’t free at all?” While Higgins understands how much she has benefited from being in the U.S., she is also critical of the American hypercapitalism that not only led to the rise of Donald Trump, but continues to "deplete everything around me” and push the planet into a devastating climate crisis. The author’s fans may find the humor in this book more subdued than in her past work, but for those willing to venture into the realms of cultural critique, her essays are both timely and rewarding.
