A chance encounter with members of an isolated wolf-shifter pack might offer new clues to a mysterious disease, but researcher Dr. Aidan Denali is also intrigued by the pack’s sexy doctor.
Aidan is tracking an alarming condition that’s causing shifter wolves to age faster than ever before. Just before his planned holiday break, Aidan learns of Nick, a banished member of the Seattle pack who is wandering the Washington wilderness. The clan leadership is known to be hostile to outsiders, and “it was the only pack he’d located that hadn’t allowed him to test members’ blood.” There are rumors that the banishment was tragic and unfair, and Aidan arranges to stay in a nearby cabin, hoping to connect with Nick and possibly help him find a new pack. Before he begins his search, however, he and his bodyguards go Christmas shopping in a nearby mall and wind up foiling an attempted kidnapping, which gives them an unexpected chance to meet Holly Gray, the Seattle pack’s doctor. Holly dislikes the way her alpha treats Aidan after he rescued a child from their pack and is angry that they won’t take part in the research. Joining forces, Holly and Aidan find Nick, who gives them some background on the pack and its history as well as a blood sample, which leads to the discovery that the Seattle pack’s blood may be the link to a cure. Aidan and Holly are falling in love, but they’ll face plenty of hostility and other threats before they get to celebrate Christmas or a wedding. Spear’s writing lacks panache, but it gets the job done, effectively pulling together a complicated story that includes a wilderness rescue and a shortsighted clan attack that turns into a hostage situation.
A satisfying shape-shifter romantic adventure.
