There’s no question of Det. Harriet Foster returning from two months’ leave to her old precinct, which is haunted by her memories of Det. Glynnis Thompson from before and after her suicide. When Sgt. Sharon Griffin, her new boss, partners her with Det. Jim Lonergan, aptly describing him as a serviceable asshole, the two tackle the fatal stabbing of DePaul student Peggy Birch, an activist working to reform the police force, on the Riverwalk. Lonergan naturally assumes that Keith Ainsley, the Northwestern student found unconscious a few feet from the body, is responsible, but Harriet is less ready to sweat Ainsley, partly because, like him, she’s Black, partly because Lonergan puts her back up. No sooner has the forensic lab announced that the blood on Ainsley’s clothes isn’t Peggy’s than a second corpse turns up, this one sporting the patch of Peggy’s blood that Lonergan had longed to find on Ainsley. A third murder makes it seem more likely that a serial killer who preys on red-haired women is at work. As psychiatrist Mariana Silva inserts herself into the case with a persistence that doesn’t bode well for her own life span, a succession of cutaways to the twins Bodie and Amelia Morgan—whose father, accountant Tom Morgan, felt compelled years ago to kill a series of redheads—broadly implies that the new murders are very much a family affair. But which member of the family?

Hair-raising fun!
Two strange deaths in the desert pose tough questions in this fifth Nora Kelly adventure.
In a remote section of New Mexico, a woman walks alone into the blistering desert heat. In a trance, she ignores her horrific thirst and discards her clothing, piece by piece, until she lies down and dies. Five years later, a video crew with a drone discovers her skeletal remains, which they promptly report. Agent Corrie Swanson is part of an FBI team that heads out into the bleak badlands to investigate. She shares a photo with anthropologist Nora Kelly, who is especially intrigued by the pair of rare green lightning stones found under the skeleton. The woman died with perfect health, yet no one had reported her missing. DNA confirms the 40-ish woman was Molly Vine, an apparently vibrant person who “wouldn’t just throw her life away.” Then the FBI finds another body, another woman, same trail of clothing and pair of green lightning stones, but her death is much more recent. And that’s just the beginning of a tale that gets curiouser and curiouser with discoveries of ancient mass murders and modern mind control. Corrie and Nora are a perfect pair: smart and professional, and with bravery they will need in abundance. At one point, they compare approaches: As an anthropologist, Nora is trained not to judge; as an FBI agent, Corrie is trained to judge. As they delve into the investigation, Nora’s younger brother, Skip, and his billionaire buddy, Edison Nash, complicate matters immensely. They decide to go camping and investigate on their own, and Skip reminds Nash that taking ancient artifacts like an obsidian arrowhead is a felony. But as strange shadows lurk around their faded campfire at night, they learn that getting in trouble with the law is the least of their worries. The landscape imbues a special flavor to this engrossing yarn—the adobe kivas with signs of thousand-year-old murders, the slot canyons, the changing terrain as desert yields to ponderosa pine—and the sandstorms that can abort a rescue. In this setting, an unknown enemy causes cringeworthy violence that the heroes may have to face alone. But as Corrie tells Nora, “We’ve got a gun. We’ve got a knife. Now we need a plan.”

Finley O’Sullivan is the only child of a powerful local family. She rarely sees her mother, a judge, but she maintains a warm relationship with her father and is blessed with a lifelong friendship with Matthew Quinn, a high-powered lawyer who always has her back. She’s especially treasured that friendship ever since the murder of her husband, Derrick, caused a breakdown that put paid to her job as an assistant district attorney. Instead, Finley’s taken a job as an investigator for alcoholic lawyer Jack Finnegan, an old family friend who’s working on a case that will change her life again. Charles Holmes, who’s in prison for multiple homicides, now claims that the murder of Lance Legard, a big man in the music scene, was not one of his. Cecelia lives at home and never goes out; Olivia graduated from college and moved to California. Finley still lives in the half-finished house Derrick bought when they married, but now she starts to learn things that shake her faith in him. Messy affairs and a love-hate relationship between the twins are only a few of the things that the highly intuitive Finley must work through to solve the mystery.
