OLIVER'S FRUIT SALAD

Oliver, who didn’t like vegetables in French and Bartlett’s Oliver’s Vegetables (1995), returns to express his opinions on fruit. The canned and packaged fare offered by his mother makes him unhappy; none of it measures up to the fresh garden goodies he saw while staying at Grandpa and Gran’s. So they go to the market and load up on fresh fruit, which Oliver also turns down: “No, thank you. I just helped Grandpa. I didn’t eat any of the fruit. I don’t like fruit.” Then Grandpa and Gran come for a visit and they whip up a fruit salad, which is so eye-pleasing that Oliver digs in. This story doesn’t have the clever twist or the narrative strength of Oliver’s introduction to vegetables, which involved discovery and connection—this time he decides to eat the fruit because it looks nice. But French’s story is never didactic, and perfectly reflects many children’s feelings about fruit. Bartlett’s artwork is as lush and electric as ever, demonstrating in the selection of fruit an act akin to picking jewels. (Picture book. 3-6)

GOLDIE'S GUIDE TO GRANDCHILDING

Intended as an amusing parody, this groans with outdated irrelevance and immaturity.

While spending the day with Grandpa, young Goldie offers tips on the care and keeping of grandparents.

Though “loyal and loving,” Goldie’s grandfather proves to be quite a character. At Grandparents Day at school, his loud greeting and incessant flatulence are embarrassing, but Goldie is confident that he—and all grandparents—can be handled with the “right care and treatment.” The young narrator notes that playtime should involve the imagination rather than technology—“and NO video games. It’s just too much for them.” Goldie observes that grandparents “live on a diet of all the things your parents tell them are bad for them” but finds that Grandpa’s favorite fast-food restaurant does make for a great meal out. The narrator advises that it’s important for grandparents to get plenty of exercise; Grandpa’s favorite moves include “the Bump, the Hustle, and the Funky Chicken.” The first-person instruction and the artwork—drawn in a childlike scrawl—portray this grandfather in a funny, though unflattering, stereotypical light as he pulls quarters from Goldie’s ears, burps on command, and invites Goldie to pull his finger. Goldie’s grandfather seems out of touch with today’s more tech-savvy and health-oriented older people who are eager to participate with their grandchildren in contemporary activities. Though some grandparent readers may chuckle, kids may wonder how this mirrors their own relationships. Goldie and Grandpa are light-skinned; Goldie’s classmates are diverse. I AM AMELIA EARHART

The ever-popular pioneering female pilot gets a breezy and very incomplete biography.

Meltzer gives Amelia a first-person voice and, in a very sketchy narrative laced with comic-book speech bubbles, presents her as a dare-devil tomboy. The flying bug hits her when she goes up for a flight with Frank Hawks at the age of 23. She tries her hand at different jobs to earn money for flying lessons; Meltzer, writing too glibly, calls stenography, one of those failed efforts, a “fancy-schmancy word.” As Amelia makes her solo trans-Atlantic flight, she shouts, “This is AWESOME!”—a word no doubt intended to resonate with contemporary readers but unlikely to have occurred to Earhart at the moment. The text concludes with an exhortation to “Never let anyone stop you. / Whatever your dream is, chase it. / Work hard for it.” There is nary a mention of her final, disastrous around-the-world flight and disappearance over the Pacific. Eliopoulos’ digitally rendered art is cartoon in style, with Earhart resembling a bobblehead doll and wearing an aviator hat and goggles. The audience for this mixed-up comic/bio is not at all clear. Given its incomplete information and lack of source material (an actual quote from Earhart is unreferenced), there is no justifying calling it a biography. Nor is there enough entertainment to call this a comic book.
