Daniel Kraus’ Angel Down is headed to the big screen, Deadline reports.
Kraus’ novel, published last July by Atria, follows five World War I soldiers who are sent on a mission to euthanize a wounded comrade-in-arms and discover a fallen angel who might have a secret that could end the war. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book “an impressive and surprising take on war-story tropes.”
Imagine Entertainment, the production company founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, is developing the adaptation. Kraus will write the screenplay for the film, and Grazer will be among its producers.
Imagine is also behind a film adaptation of Kraus’ 2023 novel, Whalefall, which is directed by Brian Duffield and stars Austin Abrams, Josh Brolin, and Elisabeth Shue. That film is set for release on Oct. 16.
“I had a dream experience with Imagine on Whalefall, so when it came to Angel Down, there was only one home I wanted for it,” Kraus told Deadline. “This is precisely the sort of script I want to be writing, one that uses deep historical research to excavate a genre-shredding story that goes in wildly unexpected directions. This script goes all-in, and I’m happy to have Imagine going all-in too.”
