Carley Fortune’s This Summer Will Be Different is headed to the small screen, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Fortune’s novel, published in 2024 by Berkley, follows Lucy, a woman who visits Prince Edward Island, one of Canada’s Maritime Provinces, on a vacation. There she sleeps with a man whom she later learns is her best friend’s brother. The two continue an intermittent sexual relationship that eventually blossoms into something more meaningful. A critic for Kirkus called the book “a steamy, romantic summer read with a charming setting.”

Netflix in Canada is developing the adaptation. Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart (Suze, Mr. D) will serve as showrunners and executive produce alongside Fortune.

Two of Fortune’s other novels are also being developed for the screen. Meet Me at the Lake is being adapted as a Netflix movie produced by Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and her novel Every Summer After is slated to be an Amazon series titled Every Year After.

In a statement, Fortune said, “I fell in love with Prince Edward Island first in the pages of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and again when I visited with my best friend in my early 20s. That vacation, the beauty of the island, the warmth of its people, and the friendships that sustain us—are the foundation of This Summer Will Be Different. I’m thrilled to bring this sweeping love story to the screen with Netflix and to transport audiences to the glittering shores and windswept beaches of PEI.”
