Freida McFadden’s The Divorce is getting a film adaptation, Variety reports.
McFadden’s thriller, set for publication on May 26 by Poisoned Pen, tells the story of Naomi, a woman whose husband leaves her for a younger woman. Naomi becomes obsessed with the woman and uncovers secrets about her, then realizes that she might be in danger. A critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Trust no one in this over-the-top tale of deception and revenge.”
Studiocanal and Working Title will produce the film adaptation. Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh said, “From the very first page, it was utterly compelling. Freida has a rare ability to draw readers—and viewers—into an unsettling sense of comfort, before brilliantly pulling the rug from under them. The Divorce is ambitious, aspirational and irresistibly addictive storytelling at its best.”
And McFadden said, “I’m delighted to be working with the teams at Studiocanal and Working Title to bring The Divorce to the big screen. From the start, they have come forward with an unparalleled enthusiasm and a strong vision for how to get this project off the ground. I can’t wait to see what unfolds!”
Last year, McFadden’s 2022 novel, The Housemaid, was adapted into a film directed by Paul Feig, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. A sequel to that film, based on McFadden’s The Housemaid’s Secret, is currently in the works, with Feig and Sweeney set to return and Kirsten Dunst joining the cast.
