Last week, Vice President JD Vance announced that he will publish a book about his conversion to Catholicism. The cover of Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, which Harper plans to release in June, features a photograph of a small, picturesque church against a backdrop of lush green hills.
It didn’t take long for the Internet to notice something odd: The church on the cover is not a Catholic one.
The Washington Post reports that the house of worship depicted on the book jacket is Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Elk Creek, Virginia. Congregants told the Post that the church does not have a connection with Vance.
Gleasanna Dixon, who last year retired as the church’s pastor, did not seem offended that Harper used the photograph for Vance’s book. “How wonderful!” she said. “The Catholics, the Baptists, the Methodists—we’re all going to be in heaven together.”
Tina Andreadis, Harper’s publicity director, explained the cover art choice to the Post, saying, “The church comes from the part of the country where Vice President Vance grew up. He was raised in Protestant and evangelical churches; he talks about Christianity in an ecumenical sense throughout the book.” Vance’s hometown of Middletown, Ohio, is more than 350 miles away from Elk Creek.
Social media users were more skeptical of the book’s cover. On the platform X, user Mike Nellis wrote, “JD Vance using a photo of a Methodist church on the cover of his book about CATHOLICISM is some real Veep-level shit,” referring to the HBO show that followed a hapless, gaffe-prone U.S. vice president.
And another user with the handle emilie posted, “did jd vance's journey back to faith specifically include this methodist church in appalachian virginia or did he just grab the folksiest adobe stock image he could find.”
