Brandy stopped by Good Morning America to discuss her new memoir, Phases.

Brandy’s book, published Tuesday by Hanover Square Press, tells the story of her life growing up in Mississippi and California, as well as her career as a young pop star and actor known for her role on the sitcom Moesha. A critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Her candor and conversational prose will appeal to many. A hopeful, honest memoir.”

Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts asked Brandy why she decided to write a book.

“To give my younger self a voice,” Brandy replied. “To give my inner child a process to heal from the things that I went through with all of the scrutiny and pressures on my life growing up as a child star. It was a time for me, a difficult time, and I wanted to bring light to the stories that shaped me.”

Roberts noted that Brandy’s daughter, the singer and actor Sy’Rai Smith, was in the process of reading her mother’s memoir.

“She’s going to be able to connect with my life and the things that I’ve been through, and see that I’m a survivor and I can overcome anything that I’ve been through,” Brandy said.

“No, you’re a thriver,” Roberts said.

“A thriver, I love that!” Brandy said. “Come on, Robin Roberts. Yes!”
