Reese Witherspoon has selected Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray’s A Pair of Aces as the June pick for her popular book club.
Benedict and Murray’s novel, published Tuesday by Berkley, follows Eunice Carter, a New York assistant district attorney, and Polly Adler, a brothel owner, who team up to bring down the gangster Lucky Luciano. It’s the third collaboration between the authors, following The Personal Librarian and The First Ladies.
Witherspoon announced the novel’s selection in an Instagram video set to a remix of “Long Train Runnin’” by the Doobie Brothers. The video features Witherspoon looking at the camera as a series of captions appear on screen: “Mid-year check in: Did I stop saying ‘just one more chapter’ at 1 a.m.? Did I stop sending my kids articles they didn’t ask for? Did I stop starting new projects?” She shakes her head after each question.
Then comes a final caption, “Did Reese’s Book Club pick another amazing read for June?” She smiles widely and holds up a copy of A Pair of Aces.
On Instagram, Benedict reacted to the novel’s selection, writing, “OVER THE MOON!!!! We are so so excited to have our latest novel A PAIR OF ACES as the @reesesbookclub for June!!! Beyond grateful and can’t wait to connect to all the readers and the @reesesbookclub and @hellosunshine folks!”
And Murray wrote, “So that scream you just heard? Yeah, that was me! How cool is this? It’s PUB DAY AND A Pair of Aces was chosen as Reese’s Book Club June Pick! So excited, so honored!”
