Liane Moriarty will revisit the women of her bestselling novel Big Little Lies in a sequel, People magazine reports.
Crown will publish the author’s Big Little Truths in the summer. The press calls the book “the perfect novel for longtime fans and new readers alike.”
Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, published in 2014 by Amy Einhorn/Putnam, featured a group of women who meet at a kindergarten orientation for their children and form alliances and rivalries; their lives are upended when, at a school fundraiser, a man falls from a balcony and dies. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Deservedly popular Moriarty invigorates the tired social-issue formula of women’s fiction through wit, good humor, sharp insight into human nature and addictive storytelling.” The novel was adapted into an Emmy-winning HBO series starring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Shailene Woodley.
Big Little Truths will follow the characters from Big Little Lies 10 years after the events of the first book. “When a strange man begins lurking around the school asking supposedly innocent questions, this tightly connected group of women must finally face the full repercussions of the big little truths they have and haven’t shared with their kids,” Crown says. The new novel will form the basis for the third season of the television series Big Little Lies.
Moriarty shared news of her new novel on Instagram, writing, “Big Little Lies was released more than a decade ago. Now, in Big Little Truths, the kids are teens, their parents are older (but not necessarily wiser) and old secrets and new truths are about to catch up with everyone.…I hope that you too will feel like you’re back with old friends.”
Big Little Truths is scheduled for publication on Aug. 25.
