John Lee's almost declamatory delivery blends well with the subject here. The author goes far beyond merely interpreting Homer to examine the nature of epic poetry, its use of language, and the deepest historical sources of the texts. Nicholson also presents an interesting, and decidedly minority, opinion on the dating of THE ILIAD. Lee presents all that clearly, with nothing more than accent shifts to indicate when the author is quoting experts. But it's in the lengthy quotations from Homer that Lee really shines, giving us a taste of what a bardic recitation might have sounded like. Even those not familiar with Homer should enjoy this, and those who are familiar will find much that is new.

Addis delivers a satisfying performance that will keep listeners engaged in this commendable history.
Matt Addis narrates Bayliss’ detailed but straightforward history of Sparta, from prehistory to the destruction of the Spartan hegemony in the 360s B.C.E., both ably and amiably. His resonant voice is likeable, if sometimes scratchy. And his manner is so thoroughly friendly that the program seems like history as narrated by a kindly uncle—but an astute one. His understanding and interpretation of the text are precise, and his tones and emphases are correct and helpful. Addis’ pacing is slightly slow, with notable pauses between text blocks, but given the complicated interurban politics of the ancient Greek city-states, moderate pacing is helpful rather than distracting.

There’s something calming about listening to ancient history, as this well-researched audiobook amply demonstrates. Mark Elstob’s polished, quietly nuanced narration maintains distance and balance while giving full weight to the narrative’s many fine details. Elstob has narrated two of Goldsworthy’s previous audiobooks, companion histories of the long competition between Rome and Persia. He perfectly matches this prolific popular historian’s lucid and impartial narrative style and his knack for balancing a panoramic view with a close recreation of place and action. The long, contentious rivalry between Athens and Sparta turned victory over Persia into division and civil strife.
