What if all superheroes turned out to be supervillains? Macleod Andrews delivers all the suspense of this gripping young adult novel. His voice transitions from the young, optimistic tones of teenager David to the deeper, grittier vocals of Prof, who is head of a group called The Reckoners. They gather to fight against the Epics, humans that for unknown reasons have been gifted with powers beyond those of mere mortals, which they wield for personal gain. Andrews also engages listeners with convincing French and Southern accents as well as realistic and diverse feminine voices, fully realizing the unique personalities within the Reckoners. This book is the perfect marriage of masterful writing and versatile narration.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.
