The philandering President of the United States has died, nicked in the noggin by an antique Revere spittoon. Evidence points to the first lady. Only Boyce "Shameless" Boyer, the best and most unscrupulous criminal attorney in the world, can save her. But they have baggage--she jilted him 25 years earlier in favor of the suitor she is now accused of killing. Part satire, part legal thriller, this book gets a nice read from Tim Matheson. He is perhaps a bit too coarse to put across some of the wittier ripostes and asides; otherwise, he keeps things moving briskly in a lucid, taut abridgment.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
