Kristin Atherton charms in Levy’s literary love letter about a woman who travels to Paris for a year to research Gertrude Stein. Atherton's delivery of Levy's curious turns of phrase and characteristic repetition are served well by the audio format, their quirky charm intact and their unpredictability all the more delightful. Without the negative space readers would see on the page, some of Levy’s one-line paragraphs come across as a little stilted at first, but Atherton’s cadence and tempo are confident, even in her silent beats. She voices Levy’s dispatches from expat Paris as the protagonist and her two female best friends strut uncertainly through their year, mainly in search of a missing cat.

In this sequel to Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry brings back Aurora Greenway, who is now dealing with her various lovers and friends plus three grown grandchildren with a variety of problems. He presents a tale of growing up and growing old which is bittersweet and funny. Narrator Ivey uses a slight east Texas accent which authenticates the setting of the story. Each character's voice has a slightly different inflection to differentiate it. It all works together well. As you listen, you feel as if you might actually be in Houston sharing the lives of these resilient and refreshing people.
