Haitian Gilbert Chevalier, a standout on the soccer pitch, leaves his homeland for the United States, where he finds himself representing the U.S. in the World Cup. He tells his story looking back from death row, though listeners don’t find out until the end how he got there. Jamie Hector’s narration is brilliant. His Haitian French accents are consistent, and his lilting, singsong voices bring the story to life. Through his accents and intonations, he conveys the emotions of the characters—some of whom are real historical figures. His deft narration shapes the audiobook. This is not a sports story per se; rather, soccer helps carry the plot.

In this sequel to Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry brings back Aurora Greenway, who is now dealing with her various lovers and friends plus three grown grandchildren with a variety of problems. He presents a tale of growing up and growing old which is bittersweet and funny. Narrator Ivey uses a slight east Texas accent which authenticates the setting of the story. Each character's voice has a slightly different inflection to differentiate it. It all works together well. As you listen, you feel as if you might actually be in Houston sharing the lives of these resilient and refreshing people.
