In this sixth installment of the Finlay Donovan series, narrator Angela Dawe returns to bring the recurring cast vividly to life while also introducing new characters. The opening scene sets the tone of comic mayhem in Finlay's chaotic world, now further complicated by the absence of Vero, her nanny and partner in crime. Stuck under house arrest in Maryland after being accused of stealing her sorority house's gambling winnings, Vero is frustrated and miserable until Finlay arrives. Finlay is determined to uncover the identity of the real thief and clear her friend's name. Together they stumble into one wildly inventive predicament after another. Dawe proves herself to be a virtuoso vocal shape-shifter, moving seamlessly from one character to another and drawing listeners in.

When the train bound from Oslo to Bergen derails at 1,222 meters above sea level in the midst of a massive blizzard, the passengers are forced to disembark at a remote hotel until the blizzard abates. But the situation grows more and more tense when first one and then another passenger is found murdered. Kate Reading is an apt voice for one-time police inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen, who was paralyzed in the line of duty and has become a no-nonsense, antisocial person. Reading capably portrays Hanne's icy reserve and keen sense of observation as the former inspector tries to unravel the murder mystery in the isolated locale. Reading also provides realistic voices for the other characters—from the sullen teenager and the hardy mountain man to the take-charge hotel operator. This is a good audiobook for wintertime listening when the snow is swirling outside.

Although there's a bit too much forensic babble in this twelfth book about anthropologist Temperance Brennan, Linda Emond makes the frequent transitions from scientific jargon to intriguing murder mystery gracefully. The plot itself is also transitional and intriguing as well. As the story opens, Brennan awakes to find herself hog-tied and bottled up in some kind of earthen tomb. As she starts to put together how she got there, piece by piece, you shift from the tomb to the facts and histories behind three killings she had been investigating. Emond transitions from past to present and scene to scene adroitly. Her voice, unusually potent for a female reader, adds just the right touch to the several characters. And there’s a big bonus included, too—the author’s first Temperance Brennan thriller, DÉJÀ DEAD—for free! A.L.H © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
