In 1974, Chip is finishing his senior year of high school when he is diagnosed with leukemia. After graduation, he leaves home in search of adventures and finds a job at the Red Maple Inn, a resort in the Poconos. One year later, his sister, Maggie, arrives at the inn looking for answers as to how Chip spent his last summer. The chapters alternate between the siblings, and the dual narration of Mia Hutchinson-Shaw and Ryan Do is seamless. As Chip, Do is intentional, making every word count. Hutchinson-Shaw captures Maggie’s heartache and kindness as she struggles with the loss of her brother while finding peace in his legacy.

In this sequel to Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry brings back Aurora Greenway, who is now dealing with her various lovers and friends plus three grown grandchildren with a variety of problems. He presents a tale of growing up and growing old which is bittersweet and funny. Narrator Ivey uses a slight east Texas accent which authenticates the setting of the story. Each character's voice has a slightly different inflection to differentiate it. It all works together well. As you listen, you feel as if you might actually be in Houston sharing the lives of these resilient and refreshing people.
