Marin Ireland bolsters the individuality in this story with her absorbing narration. She introduces listeners to Caroline, a young writer who has eschewed her life in New York City for a residency in the New England town of Greenhead. Caroline has found unexpected love in a local, Van, and her new world is full of possibility. But everything changes when Caroline meets the other women in Van's orbit. Cycling through a cast of four characters, Ireland makes them recognizable through voice alone: Caroline's hopeful naïveté; Bailey's flirtatious air; Augusta's commanding tone; and Fran's fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants ease. Ireland also perfectly portrays their families—she even gives a unique intonation to each child.

In this sequel to Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry brings back Aurora Greenway, who is now dealing with her various lovers and friends plus three grown grandchildren with a variety of problems. He presents a tale of growing up and growing old which is bittersweet and funny. Narrator Ivey uses a slight east Texas accent which authenticates the setting of the story. Each character's voice has a slightly different inflection to differentiate it. It all works together well. As you listen, you feel as if you might actually be in Houston sharing the lives of these resilient and refreshing people.
