Danielle Ferland reads Hannigan’s debut novel in a sweet voice with gravelly undertones. Her style matches the bittersweet aspects of the story perfectly and highlights its contrasting elements. Eleven-year-old Delly has a long history of causing trouble, and just about the whole town has had enough. For listeners, Delly’s troubles and her stories of freeing chickens and stealing brownies are highly entertaining. But under threat of expulsion from school, Delly tries to reform herself and in the process befriends a strange new girl. Ferris doesn’t speak and doesn’t like to be touched. Ferland’s pacing and pitch are as lively as the story, and she switches from comedy to heartbreak with perfection as Delly discovers what’s behind Ferris’s silence.

The combination of sound effects and Quinn's exaggerated character voices make this animation for the ears.
Joshua Quinn narrates this short book featuring Waffles, a friendly dog who wants a hug, and his haughty housemate, Julius the cat. Quinn gives each a fitting voice—eager and goofy for Waffles, slow and somewhat disdainful for Julius. The two interact in typical cat and dog fashion. Classic cartoon-style sound effects accompany Waffles' attempts to hug his friend. Boings, zings, cymbal crashes, howling, meowing, and more punctuate the music and narration. Julius is not interested in hugs. After a day of trying, Waffles finally settles down for a nap to the sound of a music box lullaby. A tired Julius snuggles in beside him.

A fresh, dynamic interpretation of Woodson's poetry.
Woodson originally narrated her memoir in 2014, and this updated production features a lively chorus of voices, a new bonus chapter, and testimonies about the legacy of Brown Girl Dreaming. The audiobook opens with spare guitar music, and Woodson narrates her new, emotion-filled introduction. The chorus—Denée Benton, Marley Dias, Dominique Fishback, Big Freedia, Montego Glover, Nicole Ari Parker, Tika Sumpter, and Lena Waithe—then jumps in, each contributor delivering one poem and passing the mic to another voice for the next. The variety of voices adds a little spice, as their narration styles are very different from one another. Snappy musical interludes by Toshi Reagon feature before each section.
