Julia Whelan delivers a charming, romantic listening experience set in small-town Maine. Recently finding herself single again, Laurie Sassalyn comes upon a wooden duck decoy and an old letter among the belongings of her late great-aunt, Dot. After a con artist steals the decoy, Laurie and her friends set out on a heist to get it back. When Laurie reconnects with her high school boyfriend, sparks fly. Whelan nails the snappy dialogue and captures the tension of the second-chance romance. She creates realistic characters and relationships through her dynamic range of emotions. Her performance shines in her portrayal of Laurie's fierce independence and strength. While the novel seems a bit heavily focused on the decoy caper, the likable characters and heartwarming story offer plenty to root for.

In this sequel to Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry brings back Aurora Greenway, who is now dealing with her various lovers and friends plus three grown grandchildren with a variety of problems. He presents a tale of growing up and growing old which is bittersweet and funny. Narrator Ivey uses a slight east Texas accent which authenticates the setting of the story. Each character's voice has a slightly different inflection to differentiate it. It all works together well. As you listen, you feel as if you might actually be in Houston sharing the lives of these resilient and refreshing people.
