Kirsten Potter and Katie MacNichol perfectly depict Detective D. D. Warren of the Boston Police and Massachusetts State Trooper Tessa Leoni, who has confessed to shooting and killing her husband—in self-defense, she says. The case appears perfectly straightforward—except that Tessa’s 6-year-old daughter has disappeared. D.D. has her own personal issues as she investigates the murder and soon discovers that family secrets are involved. The narrators’ voices consistently match the personalities of the women and the pace of the action. Potter and MacNichol use a thoughtful pace and tone for character exploration and a tone of urgency as the story moves closer to solving the disappearance of Tessa’s daughter. The narrators work together to keep listeners engaged with the many plot twists in this police procedural.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
