by Michelle Paver ; illustrated by Geoff Taylor ; read by Ian McKellen ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2005
Sent on a preordained prophesy he needs to fulfill, Torak, a 12-year-old just-orphaned boy, finds himself alone in the world with only Wolf, a recently orphaned cub, to guide him. Ian McKellen enchants the listener with an eclectic narration that brings alive the story’s action at every turn. The ancient spiritual world and its brethren clan meet to tell the tale of a mystic’s experiment gone bad. Although the plot focuses on a formulaic quest, McKellen’s storytelling voice evokes a magical world and makes the predictable plot charming. This is the first in the series The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. It’s easy to see that it will be a must-listen series for fans of the world of numina.

Elena Rey holds listeners’ attention firmly in her grasp with her narration of this middle-grade historical fiction. Twelve-year-old Blanca is chosen by her grandmother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, to marry the prince of France. As Blanca travels from Spain, she learns lessons about how to be a queen from Eleanor and lessons about life from the difficult journey. Rey voices young Blanca, Queen Eleanor, and various male characters with equal aplomb. Eleanor sounds imperious and aged; Blanca is assuredly royal yet a still preteen; and the knights are chivalrous, pompous, and a bit overzealous. Rey’s royal harrumphs and sniffs and childish scoffs and whines add to the enjoyable soundscape.
Rey’s timeless performance makes this medieval adventure fascinating, frightening, and fun. (Historical fiction. 9-14)Pub Date: March 24, 2026
