by Paco Underhill ; Read by Rick Adamson ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2001
Rick Adamson becomes so enthusiastic in his performance that the interesting anecdotes about the science of marketing and consumer behavior become real fun to listen to. Adamson's imitation of the computer voice is only one example of his talent at adding spice to words. Told mostly through anecdotes of buying and selling research done by the author's company, WHY WE BUY offers tips valuable to anyone who sells anything. Buyers, too, will recognize tricks used by their own favorite stores to promote sales, and mistakes made to inadvertently discourage them. Learn why Radio Shack moved phones to front of the store, and why supermarkets shouldn't put the milk at the back. J. A. H. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine

The audiobook illuminates the misdeeds of malevolent marketers, sleazy lawyers, and unethical doctors.
Cassandra Campbell’s narration is a model of a nonfiction performance. Her reading of exposition is careful and convincing. She knows where to pause and how to move the action forward. Law professor Burch’s investigative report of the con men, grifters, and profiteers who took advantage of women who were harmed by vaginal mesh implant removal is deeply researched. The revelations of how these “professionals” colluded to scam these vulnerable women who experienced incontinence, pain, and emotional distress after their procedures is horrific. The patients whose mesh implants were removed often had no medical workups prior to surgeries and were charged egregious hidden fees. The text also exposes the legal system’s glacial pace.
