Beautiful Madeline Burden rescues an "ape" from laboratory experimentation, teaches him to talk and falls in love (yes, really!) with him. Together they set out to warn us all of the ecological disaster that threatens our civilization. Jenny Sterlin is top notch, by turns menacing, calculating, threatening and sensual. Her most challenging moment comes when the ape utters his first words. His voice is wholly convincing. Høeg has taken many risks writing this fable cum love story; Sterlin is able to swing the listener from the heights of a tree top aerie to the depths of our relentless quest to subdue the earth and dominate it. This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
