IN THE PLEX

HOW GOOGLE THINKS, WORKS, AND SHAPES OUR LIVES

With a commanding voice, L.J. Ganser narrates this history and exploration of Google. Perhaps because of the author's unprecedented access to the company, Levy’s discussion can feel a bit too one-sided throughout the early part of the book, but it becomes more scrutinizing by the book’s end as he considers the pitfalls and problems Google faces ahead. Ganser’s stern voice is clear and moves through the text with determination. His tone adds substantial weight to Levy’s prose, which might sound stale with a less competent narrator. Though the voice he uses for quotes is not always differentiated from the narrative, Ganser’s emphasis during the more nuanced passages and overall powerful projection will keep listeners engaged.

      SELLING OPPORTUNITY

      THE STORY OF MARY KAY

Henslee’s warm, unhurried narration makes listeners feel like the next success story could be theirs.

Barbara Henslee narrates with an intimate, upbeat delivery and a sunny Southern warmth that feels like being personally recruited to the Mary Kay empire. Her voice suits the material perfectly, drawing listeners into a bygone era when women built empires through gatherings around kitchen tables and on front porches, long before they could open their own bank accounts. Henslee never oversells, just gently persuades, mirroring the company’s own quiet pitch to millions of women that economic independence and personal transformation were within reach. The balanced treatment of the realities of multilevel marketing, alongside the truly inspirational story of founder Mary Kay Ash, make this a compelling listen for anyone curious about the often mocked world of direct sales.

Henslee’s warm, unhurried narration makes listeners feel like the next success story could be theirs.
