Thoms is the voice of Leigh, a young convict who is the only survivor when a prison transport bus goes over a ravine, crashing into the water below. Listeners hear Leigh’s anger and hopelessness as she struggles to overcome past trauma and move on from merely surviving to actually living. When she finds a job at the flower farm run by Jackson, her backstory is slowly revealed. Black is amazing as he voices five different men in this dialogue-driven story. When Leigh recounts her past, Black performs the voice of Daddy with uncompromising authority. Jackson and the other men in her life accept Leigh, their distinct voices filled with empathy, patience, and sometimes frustration as they give her space to heal.

In this sequel to Terms of Endearment, Larry McMurtry brings back Aurora Greenway, who is now dealing with her various lovers and friends plus three grown grandchildren with a variety of problems. He presents a tale of growing up and growing old which is bittersweet and funny. Narrator Ivey uses a slight east Texas accent which authenticates the setting of the story. Each character's voice has a slightly different inflection to differentiate it. It all works together well. As you listen, you feel as if you might actually be in Houston sharing the lives of these resilient and refreshing people.
